Director: Jack Raymond
Release Date: September 1930
While this film obviously makes liberal use of stock footage of several football matches the 22 May 1930 issue of Kinematograph Weekly reported that ‘the special crane device which is to be used in filming and recording goal-mouth and other incidents in the match has now been delivered to the Gaumont Company, and the first portion of the match was staged yesterday at Harrods Sports Ground, Barnes.’ I would like to thank Sebastian Wormell, Archivist at Harrods, for pointing out that the house journal, Harrodian Gazette, June 1930, reported that ‘Many visitors to Barnes have wondered what weird structures were being erected on the ground and what danger was threatened to the amenities. All anxiety has now been set at rest by the announcement that it was for taking a Film Picture “The Great Game,” the Soccer talking picture that the Gaumont British Company are bringing out.’
