On 6 December 1935 the Daily Herald optimistically reported that ‘Many actual London backgrounds are being utilised in “Mr. Ernest Bliss,” now in production at Elstree. Cary Grant and Mary Brian may be seen any day now in scenes “snatched” by the camera in the City, Horse Guards Parade, the Embankment, the Royal Exchange, Harley-street, and the Mile End-Road. Mr. Grant will, in the course of the story, play a Covent Garden porter, a London Transport bus-driver and a docker.’ While Grant does indeed play Ernest Bliss a stand in features in all of the surviving location shots. The film ran 80 minutes upon release while surviving prints appear to run no more than 62 minutes, suggesting that nearly a quarter of the film is missing, but the tone of the film does not suggest that Grant or Brian would have appeared in missing scenes shot in the City, Horse Guards Parade, or at the Royal Exchange.
Capture 1
60 Harley Street, at New Cavendish Street, sets the scene for Cary Grant's visit to a doctor.
Capture 2
While the doctor's nameplate obscures much of the view the camera points north along Harley Street from New Cavendish Street.
Capture 3
Incongruously a shot from the top of New Square, Lincoln's Inn, towards Lincoln's Inn Fields, is used to establish the location of Grant's home at '11 Regents Park Gate.'
Capture 4
'Ernest Bliss' heading north in Park Lane approaching Marble Arch Station. The bus is exiting Oxford Street.
Capture 5
Unidentified. Possibly somewhere on the Circle Line while depicting Bliss' journey across London.
Capture 6
Bliss exiting Stepney Green Station into Mile End Road.
Capture 7
Unidentified. The visual suggestion is that this is close to Mile End Station as Bliss looks for a room to rent.
Capture 8
Unidentified. Bliss presumably at a dock or other PLA facility.
Capture 9
Unidentified. As one image blends into another the area beyond the train lines is visible as Bliss returns to his room.
Capture 10
Bliss on the Albert Embankment with Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament in the distance.
