The Daily Herald  reported, 20 September 1962, that the previous day Susan Hayward and Michael Craig had been filming scenes for ‘Summer Flight’, the working title for this film, ‘in London’s famous Portobello-road market.’ A similar article also appeared in the Daily Mirror on the same day. On 28 September the Kensington News and West London Times added that the director, Dan Petrie, ‘had been in the market since 8.30 on Wednesday morning and did not pack up until it was dark. The public were very cooperative, and did exactly what they were told. And they were thrilled to think that they will perhaps appear on a West End screen, and at their own local cinema, even though it might only be for a fleeting moment!’

Portobello Road

Capture 5

Michael Craig and Hayward in Portobello Road passing the Builders Merchant, at 191B, with Blenheim Cresent extreme right. If this film is viewed in the correct aspect ratio the builders merchants name, Kadish, is visible at the top of the frame.

Portobello Road

Capture 6

As they continue south along Portobello Road the Imperial Playhouse cinema, at 191, comes into view.

Capture 7

Nothing to see here but is this a new location?

Capture 8

As Craig passes between the stalls a shop front appears to read 'Charles Grey & Sons' while there is no record of such a business trading out of Portobello Road. Perhaps if viewed in the correct aspect ratio there may be more clues at the top of the frame.

Capture 9

Once again the correct aspect ratio may supply the needed clues to identify this market location.
