On 5 May 1998 the Irish Independent reported that ‘London Transport Minister Glenda Jackson’ had visited Notting Hill yesterday and ‘spent an hour watching a scene being shot in a specially recreated Portobello market’ where Hugh Grant also presented Jackson a bouquet of flowers. The Ealing Leader, 15 May, added that a ‘one-day shoot at The Orchard last Thursday provided the setting for the home of the parents of Hugh Grant’s character when he visits them for lunch.’ Julia Roberts also visited The Orchard, Bedford Park, but the scenes were cut from the finished film. On 26 May the Daily Mirror weighed in that while ‘on location at London’s posh Savoy Hotel during a scene with some 300 extras’ a filming delay caused Roberts to suddenly demanded overtime pay on top of the £10 million she had already been paid. The report contined that ‘It took some time for the producers to persuade her to finish the scene – without handing over the cash.’
