On 21 February 1952 the Kinematograph Weekly reported that ‘Snow was a blessing and a nuisance to the Ealing unit making “Mandy” on location last week. Needing shots on a bomb-site, director Sandy Mackendrick took his lads to the real thing close to Hammersmith bridge, where the art department had put up a ruined building among the genuine ruins. Everyone had allowed for fog or rain, but snow was so little expected that some of the studio variety had been brought by “props.” Sandy told KINE Studio correspondent Graham Clarke, that the snow shot he got was “wonderful, pure Brueghel.” That achieved, however, an army of stage hands had to get busy with brooms and sweep the snow out of the camera’s view, for the rest of the work that day left winter behind.’
