Director: Basil Dearden
Release Date: September 1950
On 17 February 1950 the Chelsea News and General Advertiser reported that ‘Chelsea has once more been chosen as the setting of a new British film. On Tuesday afternoon [14 February], shoppers in the King’s Road paused to watch Miss Jean Simmons escorted into The Markham public house by David Farrar. This well-known Chelsea pub was chosen by the director, Mr. Basil Dearden, because it has so much character.’ The report continued that ‘Mrs. F.E. Andrews, who has been the licensee of the The Markham for over 30 years, is taking it all in her stride. She has helped the film unit tremendously, and soon had a back-room converted intoa start’s dressing-room.’ The Daily Mirror reported, 10 March, that ‘Shooting begins in Chelsea in a few weeks’ and that the filmmaker noted that ‘We shall want some fog in a Chelsea street’ during shooting. The Chelsea News and General Advertiser, 21 April, noted that ‘A group of busy people waited patiently for the sun to come out one morning last week. Crowds of shoppers gathered round them at the corner of Radnor Walk in King’s Road. When the sun did emerge shoppers and the little central group were rewarded. Film star Jean Simmons, carrying a bag of potatoes and apples, made her way through the lanes of traffic to the other side of King’s Road while cameras whirred.’ The report added that ‘Jean made her purchases at the vegetable stall, which has long been a permanent feature at the corner of Radnor Walk. She was served by Mrs. Rose Stanton, who owns the stall.’ Mrs Stanton stated ‘I featured in the book from which the film is being made…so when I was asked to take part in [the film] of course I said yes.’
