Without any elaboration it is mentioned in The World According to Mike Leigh, by Michael Coveney, 1996, p86, that ‘Even the exterior shots have a plaintive, insistent quality, with beautifully composed views of pebbledash houses and garages, of clear roads and tall trees, around West Norwood and Tulse Hill.’ In Mike Leigh on Mike Leigh, edited by Amy Raphael, 2008, p56, Leigh, recalling the scene where Eric Allan approaches 79 Glennie Road, states ‘There is complete silence in the street – and by the way, we never needed crowd or traffic control as it was that quiet. That’s how it was in Tulse Hill in 1971.’ It was 1988 before Leigh made his second feature film.
